In his Ph.D. thesis “2-Dimensional Pattern Recognition Algorithms. Syntactical Approaches”, he studied and developed several algorithms used in classification of handwritten characters. In 1991, he joined Department of Applied Electronics and Information Engineering , from UPB and since 2005 is Professor in the same department. Between 2000-2001 he was a Post-Doctoral researcher at INESC Porto, Portugal, dealing with Blind Signal Separation, Independent Component Analysis, Medical Image Processing and Analysis (Breast Cancer Detection and Assessment) and Human Face Detection and Classification. From 2001 to 2005, he was with Center for Geometry, Imaging, and Virtual Environments, Computing Science Department, Utrecht University, the Netherlands, as a Scientific-programmer (Post-Doc.), studying, developing and implementing algorithms for polygonal approximation and object matching. In the period 2008-2011 he joined the Human-Computer Interaction and Multimedia (HCIM) Research Team, from Lisbon University, Portugal, developing BCI algorithms for cognitive reading detection and estimation.
